What is the History Behind Presidents Day?
Originally, the holiday that we know today as Presidents’ Day was a celebration to commemorate the first president of the United States George Washington’s Birthday on February 22nd.
After George Washington passed away in 1799, and for most of the 1800s, George Washington’s Birthday was an unofficial observance.
However, it was finally officiated as a federal holiday for the entire country in 1885. This was the first federal holiday in U.S. history to celebrate the life of an individual American.
It wasn’t until the late 1960s that the shift of George Washington’s Birthday to Presidents’ Day set into motion, although probably not for the reason you would expect.
With the passing of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act proposed by Congress, the holiday was moved from Washington’s actual birthday to the third Monday of February. This was done for labor reasons so that employees would have more three-day weekends and there would be less employee absenteeism around holidays.
By the 1980s, Washington’s Birthday was known to many Americans as Presidents’ Day.
