Award-winning actress Viola Davis has announced that alongside her journey as Annalise Keating in the ABC hit TV show How to Get Away With Murder, she is also working on a documentary called A Touch of Sugar which highlights the seriousness of diabetes.
Davis has opened up about her condition of prediabetes, which is where your blood sugar levels are too high but not high enough to be considered diabetic. She has also opened up about how her family is directly affected by the disease. Her sisters, grandmother and great aunt all have diabetes. “It’s not something I talk about because it’s a disease and a lot of us simply accept - growing up my family just called it ‘sugar.’ But this must change,” says Davis.
A Touch of Sugar is funded by the pharmaceutical company Merck and the documentary challenges the stigma and lifestyle surrounded by diabetes by interviewing patients, doctors and families of those living with the disease. You can watch the trailer for the documentary here.
